Adult participatory dancing is alive and well in Gainesville, with folk and social dance-classes provided seven days a week to everyone from college students to grandparents.
The Gainesville Dance Association studios at 308 W. University Avenue — shut down for more than a year when the building's ownership changed hands — are now fully functioning again.
Known as the Gainesville Dance Association building, the generous space houses weekly gatherings for Capoiera, waltz, Israeli dance, hustle and other styles. Your feet can travel from East Coast to West Coast swing, from Argentine tango to English country dancing.
Classes are affordably priced and held seven days a week. Teachers are seasoned, knowledgeable enthusiasts who hold credentials such as U.S. Ballroom Open Champion.
Parking in the Gainesville Dance Association's lot is free. The GDA studios are full-service dance spaces with mirrored walls, wood floors and a sound system.

“New dancers are welcome at every program,” he says, “but it is easier for people to start in a class with other new dancers at the same time.”
The regular programs are as follows: Lindy Hop Swing and Hustle is on Sundays; English Country Dancing on Mondays; Brazilian dance and Capoeira on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturday mornings; West Coast Swing on Wednesdays; Balboa Swing (twice a month) on Thursdays; Ballroom Dancing and UF Argentine Tango on Fridays; West Coast Swing Dance on the first Saturday of the month; and Argentine Tango Dance on all other Saturdays.
For the ongoing programs, payment is per event. There are often special discounts for attending two or more gatherings per week. No partner is required to attend.
Also offered are monthly dance brunches, occasional workshops and special charity benefits.

Weitzen also notes that the two GDA studios at the 308 W. University Ave. are available to rent as well.
“The big room is available for people that want to hold programs during the mornings and afternoons,” he says. “It would be especially nice for people providing services to downtown businesses, before or during lunch, or immediately after work, such as yoga or Zumba.”
“Daytime space is also available for meetings and other programs,” he adds. “Weekend and evening availability is limited, though we have some. The small room is available for private practice, lessons and small groups.”
