Have you ever heard someone say, "If I do my job right, you will not know I exist."
Norm Sloan coached the Gators to their first SEC championship, winning 15 straight SEC basketball games.
The star of the team and most unique player in Gator basketball history was Dwayne Schintzius. The second best player on the team was power forward Livingston Chapman. Four of the five starters from the Gators' championship team returned including seniors Schintzius and Chapman.
Norm Sloan got fired and Dan DeVoe came in the next year as an interim coach. Dan DeVoe was a disciplinarian who soon ran off Schintzius and Chapman.
The Gators went from having the best year in school history to one of the worst.
The best administrations are ones you never hear about. They service the public by quietly keeping the machinery running.
Too often, administrators put their rules above their purpose. They destroy instead of nurture.
At that time, I was playing on a men's basketball team in Tampa. The coach of our team was a friend of mine and a lawyer, Jack Levine. I asked Jack, "What does it take to be a good coach?".
Jack said, "Get the best players and make sure they show up for the game."
